Customer Reviews

A nice, crisp clean performance conducted and played with insight

Look, I must say I prefer the Beethoven symphonies on period instruments in general terms. However, this recording at the masterly hands of Maestro Haitink is incredible. Such gorgeous and intelligent phrasing. The LSO's horns are outstanding (just listen to the second section of the Eroica's scherzo to hear them in top form). I also love the fact that Maestro Haitink places the first and second violins antiphonally, with the gorgeous double-basses on the left (unusual I think). The string playing is decisive and crisp, with gorgeous warmth when needed. Just so much better than the von Karajan recordings - thank god the days of self-indulgence has vanished. Hugely enjoyable.
