Album Review

The Vaughn Monroe Orchestra was chiefly utilized as background for its leader's popular but rather odd vocals. However, this collector's LP from the 1970s has 16 performances from the 1941-44 era that focus on instrumentals (with only one vocal from the leader) and are surprisingly strong from the jazz standpoint. Few of the sidemen are well-known (trumpeter Bobby Nichols is heard on two selections; the other players on some numbers include pianist Arnold Ross and guitarist Bucky Pizzarelli), but the arrangements (by George Paxton, Frank Ryerson and Gene Hammet) are well-played and very much in the swing mainstream of the period. This is probably the only Vaughn Monroe record that swing collectors will want. Highlights include "Rasputin' Tootin'," "Ballyhoo," "Boston Rocker," "Dardenella" and "Commodore Clipper."
