Close but no cigar.

Mastodon's latest album is something of a disappointment, I never have been that big of a fan of Mastodon until recently. This album is just average, apart from a few songs it's just sounds like Mastodon, nothing special about it. Sure, if you're a big fan of Mastodon you'll probably like the album more. Sadly, the album just seems overshadowed by albums like Leviathan and Blood Mountain. If you're a fan of Mastodon you'll appreciate the album, otherwise it might just be another average album to you.

Purely Stargasmic

This album is as much a masterpiece as all mastodons previous efforts, bringing new sounds to the table but keeping the mastodon feel. The best songs are black tongue, curl of the Burl, blasteroid, Stargasm and the sparrow, some moments just transcend the known musical universe, like stargasm's wonderous intro

Loving the colour and immediacy of this release. Mastodon are painting the world in any sonic flavour they want. Part of me craved another concept epic but this album is so fresh - some real highlights too like 'The Sparrow' and 'Thickening'. Long may they continue in this vein of form; they delivered the album no fan knew they wanted - an album as heavy as we've come to expect but one that also illustrates a serious progression in the depth of their sound, melodies and creativity - and they are starting to really hone their songwriting. I love the prog more than anyone but these songs are more restrained and delicate, which is an even greater skill. They don't trade their brutality and originality for it either; they cultivate it. Amazing stuff. Mastodon have established themselves as THE original heavy metal rock band of this era and this is another milestone in their journey. I'm with them all the way!

Atlanta-based sludge/stoner/alternative metal outfit Mastodon formed in 1999 around the talents of guitarist Bill Kelliher, drummer Bränn Dailor, bassist/vocalist Troy Sanders, and guitarist/vocalist Brent Hinds. One of the more notable New Wave of American Heavy Metal acts, a genre spawned in the mid-'90s by bands like Pantera, Biohazard, and Machine Head, Mastodon's innovative, lyrically astute blend of progressive metal, grindcore, and hardcore helped position the band as one of the preeminent...
