Hands down... of the greatest debuts of all time. Every song is beautiful, and all alive with the promise of great things still to come. With every one of her nine albums since, she's made good on that promise. The title track, Strange Phenomena, Oh To Be In Love, and the still phenomenal Wuthering Heights, and Kite, this was instant brilliance from the most influential musician of the 20th century.

Impressive debut album from an inimitable artist

Released when she was only 19 years old, Kate Bush's debut album The Kick Inside demonstrates her literary and cinematic influences with tracks like the haunting chart topper, “Wuthering Heights”, and the Bond homage, “James and the Cold Gun”. Bush strongly establishes her style with this album, revealing her penchant for progressive rock, mellifluous otherworldly vocals, daring lyrics and provocative sensuality, especially evident in the sumptuous “The Man with the Child in His Eyes”, “Moving” and “L’amour Looks Something Like You". The opening triptych that includes “Moving”, “The Saxophone Song” and “Strange Phenomena” are lyrically entirely separate songs, yet Bush ingeniously links them together through musical bridges to highlight their theme of sensual experiences familiar, imagined and alien.

Being the first female singer/songwriter to have a number one self-penned single in the UK, It is little wonder her work has gone on to influence such an extraordinary array of female artists who came after her, from Sarah McLaughlin, Tori Amos and Bjork to Florence Welch and Alison Goldfrapp.

This is an exceptional album. Unfortunately it is so under appreciated considering how amazing it is.

One of the most successful and popular solo female performers to come out of England during the last several decades of the 20th century, Kate Bush was also one of the most unusual, with her keening vocals and unusually literate and complex body of songs. As a girl, Catherine Bush studied piano and violin while attending the St. Joseph's Convent Grammar School in Abbey Wood in South London. She also amused herself playing an organ in the barn behind her parents' house. By the time she was a teenager,...
