At last - vocalists identified

Anyone who likes Anne Lenner should immediately download this album, with over thirty songs by the songstress from the Savoy. This is one of the few Carroll Gibbons albums where the vocalists are named. If only iTunes could do this for every album.

However, there are one or two errors and omissions.

Disc 1 is basically correct apart from a spelling mistake (or typo) on Track 14 "Scatterbrain". His name was Whitley not Whitely.

Disc 2:
Track 1 "Shall We Dance?" is a duet between Anne Lenner and George Melachrino.
Track 2 "The Night Is Young And You Are So Beautiful" is sung by the deep Australian voice of Brian Lawrance.
Track 6 "Seal It With A Kiss" is another vocal by Brian Lawrance.
Track 8 "I Don't Want To Make History" is also by Brian Lawrance. (Adelaide should be proud of him!)
Track 9 is actually titled "I've Got A Feelin' You're Foolin' " NOT "Fallin' "

Disc 3:
Track 2 "I'm Gonna Get Lit Up (When The Lights Go Up In London)" is sung by the maestro himself - Carroll Gibbons.
Track 3 "It's You That I Love" is sung by Alan Dean.
Track 4 "Moonlight Becomes You" is sung by Carroll Gibbons.
Track 5: "Better Not Roll Those Blue Blue Eyes" is again sung by Carroll Gibbons.
Track 11 "What's New?" is a duet between Anne Lenner and Eric Whitley (NOT Whitely as previously shown on Disc 1, Track 14).

Apart from the above mentioned minor "paperwork" errors this is a delightful collection covering the mid to late 1930's when good music ruled London's Savoy Hotel, and Mayfair in general. The transfers from 78 rpm records have been well done with a noticable lack of hiss and crackle. The genre is listed as "Jazz" but I would have prefered "Swing/Jazz" or even "Sophisticated Swing". It could also be described as "1930's Popular". The choice is yours. This music has lyrics and diction you can understand and something that appears lacking in contemporary music - melody.

Now I will go and join the ranks of The Grumpy Old Men.

Pianist and bandleader Carroll Gibbons was born in Clinton, MA, sometime during 1903, and it wasn't until he relocated to England in 1924 that he found acclaim for his musical talents. While playing piano at the Savoy Hotel, Gibbons helped form the Savoy Orpheans, a jazz outfit that included such other American players as Howard Jacobs on alto sax and Joe Brannelly on banjo. The group went their separate ways by 1928, as Gibbons focused on bandleading, including the New Mayfair Dance Orchestra. After...
