12 Songs, 46 Minutes

EDITORS’ NOTES

Going into her seventh album, Sia Furler wanted to try “an experiment”. She would record self-written tracks already pitched to—but overlooked by—A-listers. “I feel like they’re hits, but nobody wanted them,” she said. She was right. This Is Acting dives head first into pop’s waters, but its bold and beguiling songs retain their author’s earthy edge. Sia’s cathartic voice is, as usual, the star—“Alive” and “House on Fire” pulverise all before them, the big-night-out anthem “Cheap Thrills” is a tonne of fun and “Reaper” (a Kanye West co-write) is the sort of mid-tempo empowerment jam only she can nail so triumphantly.

Australian Talent

Sia is probably one of the best "musical" exports of this country. The album is great so far and her live performances of some of the songs on the 7th LP have been incredible. Although the traditionalists (the Zero 7's and Colour the Small One's) will probably find the new tone a bit different to what they are used to, her diversity as a singer and brilliant songwriter cannot be argued with. She is one of very few female singers that can create clever hooks and still carry some emotion into the lyrics of a song.

Can 2 female artist be both good in their own right?

While this is not the best and its a little too much the same as the last album so far, its still a lot better than half the s@%t out there at the moment. What I never understand is why everyone is comparing and saying Adele is better. They are very different in their music styles, almost incomparable. Why does this only happen with female artists? Never happens with male artists. You can like 2 different artists at the same time.. if your tiny mind allows for it.

Disappointed....

Don't get me wrong Sia IS a fantastic musician and deserves all the praise that she's recieved but this album is not her best work. It's actually, dare I say it, terrible. This is proof that Sia has stopped evolving as an artist and is heading backwards in her creativity. No longer are her songs beautiful and powerful, they are now pretentious lyrics screamed over generic pop beats. It's always sad to see a creative and inspiring artist sell out.....
