To Love You

To Love You

On their sentimental debut, Sydney trio Glades trace the good, bad, and ugly of relationships and discover a universal truth: There’s always a place for synth-pop power ballads, especially if you’ve been wronged. On “Not About You”, frontwoman Karina Wykes calls out her partner in a song so glittery and euphoric, it’s as healing as a wild night out. Elsewhere, hiccuping trap breaks (“Eyes Wide Shut”), electric guitar licks (“Neon Buzz”) and pitched-up synths (“Do Right”) make otherwise emo songs feel hopeful and escapist. Like fellow electro-poptimists Chvrches, Broods and Troye Sivan (who endorsed them after they covered his song “Fools” in 2015), Glades make glass-half-full love songs that you can sing, dance, and cry to all at once.
