Unexpected pleasure

I had never heard of The New Pornographers before reading a newspaper review of Together upon it's release. Apparently I've been missing out for years and they have other great albums. Be that as it may this album is really, really, interesting and infectious. It's hook laden, beautifully crafted, highly original pop with sublime vocal harmonies. The best thing is its unexpected twists and turns, key and tempo changes and arrangements that surprise at first and then really draw you in. Played loud it's got satisfying, rousing power to go with the beauty. At the moment I can't take it off, it's a real grower. Various bits put me in mind of Silverchair, The Panics, R.E.M. and The Lightning Seeds. Highly recommended.
