Album Review

With four years of opera training behind her, it's clear that 19-year-old pop singer Kat DeLuna — who was born in the Bronx, spent several years in Santo Domingo, and eventually returned to the U.S. — wasn't signed merely on the basis of her looks and passable ability to carry a tune. Her debut, 9 Lives, features credible streaks of dancehall, Latin pop, Euro-pop, modern R&B, freestyle, and yes, (albeit to a much lesser extent) opera as well. To DeLuna (who co-wrote everything) and her producer RedOne's credit, the album never quite sounds calculated or unnatural. While appealing multicultural/genre-crossing pop is nothing new, and a few tracks here are boilerplate and lack bite, DeLuna's controlled exuberance, ability to adapt to numerous styles, and considerable vocal ability keep it all afloat. The week the album was released, "Whine Up," the dancehall-flavored lead single featuring Elephant Man, had already been on the Hot 100 chart for two months, and it's the album's definite center, though a handful of potential singles could break the mainstream pop singles chart while approaching the tops of the dance, R&B, and Latin charts. On the surface, it might seem like she's an exceptionally talented singer who happened to strike at the right time with the right sound, but the majority of 9 Lives makes it known that she should be around for some time.

New Artist With A Big Voice

Opera Trained singer Kat DeLuna's first album 9 Lives has finally been released in Australia, and it has a few changes from the American Release. The second single Run The Show is now a duet with Busta Rhymes and not Shaka Dee and Akon is featured on Am I Dreaming. Stand Outs include: Run The Show - 2nd Single with great production (get both Busta and Shaka Dee Version if you can.) Am I Dreaming- Mellow track Whine Up - Great First Single (look out for the remix with Fatman Scoop) Animal - Stays true to her beats and vocals

Epic quality.

Equipped with an extremely strong voice, vocals on this album are phenomenal. Kat DeLuna's debut album hasn't been up to critical acclaim with success internationally, but hopefully the Australian public (& the re-release of the album which in this case, is THIS album version) react differently to it, as well as the rest of the world. The songs are deep, emotional, addictive, & pure club-bangers. These styles range from the first released hit 'Whine Up', along with the high energetic stomper 'Run The Show' - which serves as the album's second single - & the slow, reggae-like tones of 'Am I Dreaming'. Each song serves a different style, whichever way you want to hear it in your desired mood. Her voice is definitely a killer, & the album proves it - this girl has A LOT of potential!

This album is a album full with hits. Kat sings the songs really well and then the songs are really good as well. My Favourites are Whine Up and her new single in the US (and probably here) Run The Show.
