If it were a restaurant, it’d be a neighbourhood gem!

I’ve used 1Password for many years, since I first saw it mentioned in an online magazine. It hasn’t let me down.

These days, with the increasing proliferation of online hacking and identity theft - and that’s just of multi-$$$ corporations who can afford to pay for the best security - you HAVE to maximise your protection. Different passwords for different online accounts - if not, they get one, they got them all! And if you then think of all the online (and that includes ATM’s which are also online) accounts you have to have separate, then you need a password manager to manage them all. Let’s not forget serial numbers and other critical items too - I do!

With one password to remember, 1Password keeps all these things under control, and will even generate new passwords when you need them, and fill them in for you, or capture new logins as you set them up.

All you have to remember going forward, is one password to unlock your vault. As a grey nomad of computing, that’s about my limit anyway! So far, so good - recommended!

Hands down the best password app around

With the addition of Family sharing, I now don’t have to risk my passwords by reading them out to my wife & hoping she doesn’t write them down (or worse, when she would ask me to email them to her!). Now I simply share the credentials with her & she can log in quickly and easily.

I’m contemplating setting this up with my parents and in-laws so I they stop bugging me about their various accounts across the web!

When money matters more than security

I. Pavlov

AgileBits could have implemented shared family wallets via iCloud, this is possible with iOS 10 and macOS Sierra. That would be both secure and convenient because all data will be in iCloud and customers would not need to create a new account with AgileBits.

Instead, the developers decided to implement their own server-based solution which obviously is less secure because not matter how well it is encrypted, it would have been more secure in iCloud. The reason why they decided to go for that? Money. This allows them to justify their new subscription!

Huge BOOOO for sacrificing security and convenience of your customers for business purposes.

Developer Response

Hey there, I. Pavlov. Thank you for taking some time to leave us your thoughts. I’m sorry to hear you are less than pleased with our 1Password.com account subscription. If I may, I’d like to touch on a few points from your review. When we set out to implement 1Password.com we started with security first. We’ve always been incredibly proud of the fact that 1Password keeps all your information on your devices unless you explicitly decide to sync it via iCloud or Dropbox, and even then we didn’t have your information. With 1Password.com that prospect became a little more difficult, but it wasn’t something we wanted to lose. We knew that if we couldn’t solve this problem that the entire project was a non-starter. We ended up inventing an entirely new security mechanism called the Secret Key that we couple with your Master Password to encrypt your information to such a high degree that it is computationally infeasible for anyone to crack the encryption of your information stored on our servers. Additionally, your information never leaves your devices without being encrypted first, and we don’t know your Master Password or Secret Key. You should read up a little more at 1Password.com/security. We’re really proud of what we were able to accomplish with our security model as it let us build out the rest of the service. Every account includes simple, automatic syncing among all your devices; incredibly easy setup for new devices; included versions of 1Password on all of our platforms (Mac, Windows, iOS & Android); free upgrades to 1Password for as long as your subscription is in good standing; and automatic online backups. Is the recurring revenue from 1Password.com subscriptions a benefit to us as a company? Of course it is, but at the end of the day we’re more excited about the quality of the product we provide to our customers.

All the best,
Michael Fey,
AgileBits
