Not worth the risk
Afterpay is nice when it works, but I am incredibly shocked at the lack of security protocols and the short comings of the customer service team. A close friend of mine recently had a transaction of over $500 charged to their afterpay account by someone in a completely different state. He contacted the afterpay team *on the day* of the transaction to tell them it was not his activity, that it was fraudulent, and that he needed it cancelled. They replied that they would investigate the “alleged fraud” and freeze his account - yet two weeks on he has been charged over $100 from his account for someone else’s purchase. Any other financial institute - your bank, PayPal etc - would refund and cancel a transaction instantly if you alerted them to fraud, yet afterpay take 2 weeks to “look into it” and then do nothing at all? I also can’t believe that someone was able to make a purchase for over $500 with a completely different name, address and STATE to the person that owns the account without any kind of authentication protocols. My friend has now written for the second time in regard to the money being taken and the afterpay team have sent - almost word for word - the same email about looking into the alleged case. Makes me wonder if anything will actually be done to secure his account and refund his stolen money? I’m definitely going to be deleting the app and my account because this has made me realise it’s definitely not worth the risk.
Worst customer service
Afterpay is handy when it works, but if you ever have an issue it’s an absolute nightmare.
I was scammed by an online company who never sent my item, and I was trying to contact the company for 2 months and they never responded to my calls and emails, so I contacted Afterpay asking for a refund.
As a financial provider they’re required under Australian consumer law to refund the money if you don’t receive your goods/services. But afterpay refused to refund me and basically told me to deal with the merchant! Well I’ve been trying to contact the merchant for months and they still haven’t gotten back to me, so I’ve just been scammed out of my money.
If I hadve made this purchase using any other financial provider I would have gotten a refund. All debit cards will chargeback the money to your card, zippay will refund you if you don’t receive what you paid for, even PayPal returns the money in these situations, but afterpay is so useless and refuse to give me my money back! They’re ripping off people who are already in financial difficulties. I won’t be using afterpay again because it’s so unreliable and an unsafe payment method. I’ll be making a complaint to ACCC about this and I encourage anyone else who’s in the same boat! If they don’t fix this issue eventually they will be shut down

Absolutely Love It!!
Unlike some people I do not earn enough money to pay for things I need up front and I don’t feel comfortable signing up for those interest free cards some places offer. Afterpay has helped me so much, had a house inspection and our vacuum cleaner was not up to the task of cleaning up all the car fur. I was able to Afterpay a new Dyson vacuum cleaner that I now absolutely love. My cats needed their flea and worming monthly but unfortunately did to the price I was unable to get it for them for 2 months. They did not leave the house so I wasn’t too worried but since the weather has become nicer they wanted to go outside. Using Afterpay allowed me to order Advocate from a supplier. It may only be $50 but at the time, money was tight.
Absolutely love it. I plan to Afterpay a BBQ in the coming weeks just in time for Christmas and also a few Christmas gifts I cannot afford upfront right now.
100% recommend and I have to about 5 people and they all use it.
