In 2010 Clean Writer was the first distraction-free plain text editor for iPad. Now it's reborn, redesigned and improved with a new UI, gesture-driven workflow, options hidden from sight, color themes and more.

The app only handles plain text files (.txt, .md, .html, etc) and will NOT open .doc, .rtf or .pdf. It conveniently hides such files when browsing Dropbox folders, to prevent mistakes. (If you need access to non plain text documents, you first need to export them as plain text from Word, Pages, Text Edit or other document processing software).

What's New

Version 3.1

* minor improvements for accessibility

Crashes constantly on iPad

Marty Cobcroft

I have this on both Mac and iPad. The Mac version seems fine, stable and easy to use. Great for manuscripts and drafts. Uploads to Dropbox are essential for me as I write wherever I am and need that flexibility. However, on the iPad, disappointment in this app crept in immediately. It crashes mid sentence while using only plain text files, it will not save files correctly, even misspelling words in the process and leaving basic punctuation out.
I saved a file as an experiment, watched it upload to Dropbox, opened the same file on my iMac where I discovered it had completely left out half the last line. I repeated this three times and every time the mistakes were as varied as my levels of frustration. And then, just for good measure, it crashed three times in a row as I started to rewrite.
For such a basic little text app, the iPad version has problems that are fling-it-through-the window annoying.

Like a friend

This app really has grown on me. Like a friend it is there always available to capture my thoughts. Uncluttered, essential, simple... I don't have to think I just write. And to make it even more basic, I use the American typewriter font. Sometimes I catch myself wishing that I had to backstrike my mistakes ( rather than being able to erase them). Just joking...

Great app. Thank you.

So far this app is clean and easy to use, I like it's simplicity and usability.
The menu could be altered so you can see e changes as they happen to the text when you edit them t other then that, it's a great app for the price it is, I hope to see for updates with features and design options soon, for just over a buck I recommend this app for anyone who loves to write.
