Description

Learn more about the biodiversity of South Australia. See detailed descriptions of many of South Australia’s mammals, reptiles, birds, insects and marine life combined with stunning images and sounds.

The content has been developed by scientists from the South Australian Museum in cooperation with other museums around the country. You will find descriptions of hundreds of species, including birds, fishes, lizards, snakes, mammals, marine invertebrates, spiders, snails, slugs, butterflies, moths and other insects.

This is still only a portion of the complete faunal record of South Australia, so our team will continue to add new species and refine descriptions. Take note that the app can be used without an internet connection once downloaded.

This app is one of a suite of field guides for each state and territory, developed by Australia’s leading natural history museums.

What's New

Version 2

The app has been updated to take advantage of the larger screens on the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus.
We’ve also fixed a number of bugs, including an issue where upgrading the device to iOS 9 caused thumbnails and images to disappear in the app.

A good start

The Victorian version of this now national series has been available for some time. Whilst it is admirable that the SA museum now offers a version for this state it really deserves to be more than a badge engineered version of the Victorian offering. At the moment there are too many species listed that are simply not observable in this state and others that are commonly observable but absent from the database. It should also be possible to include many more audio tracks. On the positive side the app is intuitive and easy to use with useful information about each entry. It is a good start but the project managers need to quickly tweak the app for South Australia before the grant money is spent.

Missing birds

This is an awesome app, however how can it not include the common old Budgerigar, how did they get missed out, also the Piping Shrike which is the SA state bird, that is missing as well.
