When potentially useful meets useless

iRate and review

No doubt, it's handy to be able to view your ten most recent trips and to plan future trips within the app. At its core, though, the most important feature of the offical Opal Card app is the ability to top-up wherever you are and to see the current balance of your opal card.
This functionality becomes useless however when it can take upwards of up to an hour for your Opal Card balance to reflect its most current state.

Essentially, viewing your card's balance then becomes a guessing game as to whether your Opal Card has sufficient funds to enable you to travel on throughout the day. The obvious answer to this glaring problem is to ensure you have plenty of funds associated with your card as a precautionary measure. Yet this ignores a crucial point: should you need to top up your card in an emergency and you're out in a place where single trip Opal Cards and the ability to top-up are nigh impossible, you're left stranded. Not to mention that if you happen to lose your card, which I can say anecdotally is a constant issue for many, ensuring your Opal Card balance is far beyond what you anticipate needing at any given time is fraught with potential issues.

Surely for something so crucial to both locals and tourists alike, having an up-to-the-minute view of your current Opal Card balance along with the ability to top-up through the app at any time and have it reflected immediately on your card's balance should be top priority.

Not always reliant

I don’t expect this app to be amazing, it’s for NSW transport after all. But the delay in relevant information is annoying at best, especially when you’re on the go - which if you’re using an app on a phone is pretty much a given. If you can tap your card and have it instantaneously tell you whether you have funds, the app should be able to tell you just as quickly, and you should be able to see your tap on/off activity in real time. Instead there’s hours of delay because of... reasons?
Also, forcing people to update before they can use the app is inconvenient when you’re out and reliant on phone data/signal strength. Not everyone is going to have the perfect combination, and yet they still need access to their Opal account - forcing an update locks them out. Little tweaks could make this a great app.

Can you improve?

For a government developed app it's actually working quite well – most of the time.

Some reason for concerns of privacy is the need to always have access to your location even when the app is on the background. Do you really need to know my whereabouts all the time? Why not offer the option to only allow access to my location while using the app like so many other apps do?

The map view could also be improved by showing the direction I'm looking at. Similar to what Apple maps do with the second tap on the arrow, toggling between North Up mode and Direction of Travel mode. This is helpful when the location signal isn't accurate enough (such as when you're in the CBD) to put my location on the right spot on the map and trying to figure out if I'm on the right side of the road for that bus stop.

It would also help to know how far away a bus is that this app tells me to use. Is the 428 still to come as the app tells me, or has it already moved on, but the app didn't register that.
