Give your child a flying start in literacy by helping them practice their sight words with this bright and fun app when you are out and about.
'Out & About' has been developed by the Department of Education and Training and is aimed at Prep to Year 2 students to help them master the first 100 sight words to which they are typically introduced.
'Out & About' has been designed for parents to give to young children to fill their time in a fun and educational way.
The words in this kit are grouped into ten word sets. Students select a word set and say the word that appears. If they cannot remember the word, they can touch the word on the screen, listen to it and then swipe to the next word on the list. Once they have mastered all the words, they can move on to the next set.
In no time, your youngster will be ready to zoom through entry-level books.
This app also contains additional games and ideas for parents to help their children recognise sight words.

I love this app!
I have had this app forever! Love it! My 2 year old has really been getting in to it the last couple weeks ... I also have a 6 year old just started Qld Year1 (currently reading year 3-4 level) and a 4 year old starting Qld Prep next year already nailing word recognition and alphabet!! While I can't give this app all the credit for their skills, I do know every little bit helps .... As for improvements: I holding my breath counting down to the release of level 2 .... And hoping that a series of backup resources will be available ... I'd really like to see a matching set of flashcards ... But that's just me ... Old School!
Great - simple sight word application
This app is very simple. It does exactly what it says. It groups the most common 100 sight words into ten groups of ten. Once a pack of words is chosen the child can move through each word. The word is read to the child when the tap on it. There is also a nice explanation of a series of activities to help parents understand how they can help their child learn to identify and use the sight words.
If you want something to replace traditional flash cards to save you carying your sight word lists around, fine, but that's it. My 6 yo (qld grade 1) opened this app, tapped on a few words and declared "BORING!" and never wants to do it again. They tap, it speaks, next word is displayed, that's it. No customisation, no ability to see a list of which words are in which list (unless you download the PDF's from DET's site). There are far better sightword apps out there that are much more engaging. The only positive is that it's GREAT to finally see an app developed for the Aussie Curriculum.
