A breakthrough electronic book about our Solar System, offering hours of interactive exploration and presenting a treasure trove of visual information.
Bestselling author Marcus Chown leads us on a grand tour through the incredible diversity of planets, moons, asteroids, comets and spacecraft that surround the Sun in our cosmic backyard. Illuminating his insightful and surprising text are a wealth of beautiful 3D objects, movies, images, animations, and diagrams, all fully interactive, richly detailed and accurately based on real scientific data.
Set the heavens in motion in an interactive orrery that allows you to control the orbits of the moons and planets, observing them from any viewpoint with breath-taking surface detail. View the latest imagery returned by both manned and robot spacecraft, beautifully presented on the iPad screen. Then double-tap any astronomical object to jump directly to its chapter in the interactive book.
Solar System for iPad is the result of a collaboration between Touchpress (creators of The Elements) and Faber & Faber (London’s greatest independent publisher). It raises the bar yet again on what an interactive book can be. A perfect gift for anyone with an iPad: Solar System allows the imagination to roam free from Mercury to Pluto and beyond.

“There is so much to this application that I can only begin to the scratch the surface on its offerings. As with The Elements the content and presentation truly make learning fun and inspiring.”
- WIRED Magazine
“The new Solar System for iPad app is an amazing and extraordinarily attractive resource for amateur astronomers... an out-of-this-world digital book that is as informative as it is beautiful. It’s a stellar example for other reference app makers on how to best take advantage of the tablet medium.”

Super informative and perfectly functional
I was a little hesitant to spend the $15-$20 that this app cost given the single and bad review at that of the newest version... But it showed promise and i went all in with hopes for the best - hopes that materialised upon opening the app. I have it installed on the ipad air. I feel this point is inportant to note as it seems from other reviews that older ipads may not be so happy to run this app. All i can say is: if you have the newest ipad - do not hesitate to buy this - at the price of a book, this is well worth it with the beautiful, animated 3d models and accompanying information.
Must have for ipad air.
If you have Elements then this is better. If you have this get Elements. If you have any affinity with chemistry or astronomy you will love both of these apps. The graphics and data included will blow your mind or maybe even expand it. I would have paid double for both of them.
Great ebook but can't update anymore = poor
Purchased this a while ago, however disappointed that I need iOS 6.x now to view the updated content..
Not everyone can / wants to update to latest the iOS for various reasons and having an app that is purely dependent on ios 6 doesn't make sense - particularly as it is still buggy (maps, battery life and wifi inconsistencies).
While I agree it is hard to develop across multiple versions and platforms, it should be at a minimum the current version and the prior major version ie 5.1.1.
Other than that, it is a great informational resource..
