Spaceward Ho! is a strategic game of awesome scope. You control the entire military and economy of a spacefaring race. Your goal: explore and colonize the galaxy.

Unfortunately, you are not alone. Alien enemies bent on galactic conquest will oppose your expansion. You fight them by developing new technologies and expanding your empire, or you can ally with them to turn enemies into friends.

Terraform newly discovered worlds or mine their natural resources. Maneuver your starship fleets, both in defense of your own systems and in offensive strikes against the evil aliens. Your strategic decisions will determine the fate of the galaxy.

Based on the original Mac/PC/Palm game and updated for iOS.

A few steps forward a few steps back

So its great that Ariton tried to work around some of the UI issues with touch that are legacy from the old Mac point and click interface, but it hit and miss.

The action buttons floating near a world are a good idea.

The frequent full screen modal dialogs full of white space are a very 90's throw back that it could do without, that jar with the rest of the game.

The abandon world UI is an improvement, but still pretty sucky. No issue with leaving the button in the planet list, but why not have a cluster of buttons around the planet with _all_ the planet specific functions - tap the world once to select the planet, the button cluster pops up and then select what you want to do.

Would love an update to have the "explored worlds in order of merit" list from the original.

Give a way of collapsing off most/all of the floating windows - maybe "Notifications" style pull tabs from the sides ? That way you can have you world list, events list, ships list, and graphs slide in and out as you want them to, rather the new DYI GUI.

Saved Game UI also needs a bunch of work - its functional but ugly.

Gameplay seems to be pretty much the same as the original - i.e. mostly terrific.

Game Centre integration could do with wider range of achievements :

e.g. one for each galaxy type , one for various difficulty thresholds

Excellent port of this classic game

This is a great port of a classic Mac game. The primitive graphics and the directness of the user interface are notable but do not detract from the excellent gameplay. There's not much in the way of in-app guidance on how the moderately complex UI works, for example. The game crashed a few times for me (dev: try scrapping all ship types and then attempting to create a new one) but my game progress was not lost so it wasn't a serious problem. All up, a very enjoyable game, worthwhile even at the slightly higher price range.

Easily the best 4x game ever created. It's almost identical to the original Mac version but updated for touch screen. My only complaint is that the interface could be updated so as not to look like 1992, but it's still a great game and easily worth the money.
