Substandard content

I’m a long time subscriber to Fairfax and I’m becoming increasingly disappointed with this app as it delivers substandard content when compared to the web version or the hard copy. There are appalling typos, including the headlines and lead-ins, indicating the daily paper is published via the app without the use of sub editors. Articles viewed in the app frequently include photographs that have been cropped to the wrong shape, meaning in a portrait, the lower half of the face is missing, and there are frequent references to photographs that don’t appear in the article, but apparently do in the print version. It’s sloppy layout, and as a subscriber, it incenses me. I have worked in the newspaper industry for many years and if I had consistently delivered content with any of these problems it would have cost me my job. They are easily fixed with a little more attention to detail.

No reader comments feed

Dave H Camperdown

A little power hungry this app, even with my brand new iPad Pro, it chews through the battery. What this app doesn’t have that the last one did is the reader comments section, similar to the web version. Sometimes this is the best bit of an article (no offence journos) and not having it on the app does greatly lessen the digital experience of the paper. Would hope that SMH has a budget to fix this major floor in an enjoyable paper to read.

Slow and power hungry

Belgian Cartel

I used to like the earlier versions of the SMH app, but the current one is slower than any other app I use , and it seems to get worse with each update. I think because of the layout, it is also our most power-hungry app.

The Guardian app seems to be able to download many times quicker than this. If SMH is to remain competitive in this market, they really need to sort out these problems. It is enough to make me consider cancelling our subscription.
