- The TomTom Navigation app requires a GPS signal. 3G-enabled iPads, iPhone 3GS, and later models have an internal GPS receiver. Users of non-3G iPads and iPod touch 4th gen and later models will require an external GPS receiver. The original iPhone, iPhone 3G, original iPad, original iPod touch and iPod touch 2nd/3rd gen are not supported.
(1) Check for availability per country. Services are available via in-app purchase and require a mobile phone connection. Your operator may charge you for the data used and costs may be significantly higher when used abroad. Services can only be used on one device at the same time. If you want to use your subscription to a different device, restore your purchases in the TomTom Shop on your preferred device.
(3)Continued use of GPS running in the background can dramatically decrease battery life.
(4)Photos can only be used for navigation if you have enabled Location Services in the Camera application.

Good except for HD Traffic

The latest update runs very very hot. Battery drain is immense.

Meanwhile, the below issues I wrote about a year ago still haven't been fixed.

HD Traffic is okay when it works, but there are three issues:

1. Subscriptions will work only on one iOS device at a time. This is despite Apple's policy that developer "are required to deliver non-renewing subscriptions to all devices owned by the user."

2. Losing a mobile data connection temporarily brings up a modal alert that the data connection was lost. This dialog box overlays the app until it is dismissed by the user. Hardly the safest this to have to do while driving.

3. Once rerouted around a traffic problem, if the traffic clears, the app will not reroute back to the original route. It only looks for a better route if the current route has traffic, not if the original route is subsequently cleared of traffic.

And one other issue: If a destination is reached, then you leave the app. The next time you start up the app, that same destination is set as the current destination, as if the app doesn't know that you've already reached it.

Too many map errors!

I bought this app not long after it was first released. At the time you expect a few issues with maps being deployed in a new way & all but here we are years later & the maps have an absurd numbed if faults. At least one on three trips will result in faulty directions (ie telling you to turn down one way streets the wrong way etc) of it won't recognise the address.
Two examples - I needed to get to Westfield Bondi Junction the fastest way. I put in the street address for this shopping centre, the largest & quite likely oldest in the Eastern Suburbs of Sydney & it did not recognise the street number. The nearest alternative it would recognise was in Paddington nearly 5 ks away.
Today I had to navigate to the St Ives end of Pentecost ave from Hornsby way. This section of Pentecost has been blocked off for entry across Mona Vale rd for nearly 20 years yet TomTom directed me to enter.
The worst part of all this is that TomTom treats iOS users as 3rd class citizens and it is basically impossible to give feedback about map faults. Unless of course you pay extra.
So in short if you're after inaccurate & overpriced maps then this is the app for you!

Not as good as stand alone Garmin 3xxx series GPS

I like the graphical interface of this Tomtom software. The search function to find your destination also worked well.

I am comparing different GPS software systems with each other. To date I believe a stand alone top-end Garmin 3xxx series GPS is still the best navigation device.

The shortcomings of this software is the absence of a permanent speed limit indicator. The lane assist is very basic and only a few roads have lane assist. Garmin's lane assist is way better.

The menu system is different, but some functions are difficult to find, like ending navigation and clearing the navigation.
