The classic roleplaying game Vampire: The Masquerade returns to digital games with a Prelude of things to come. Experience a brand new interactive fiction, written and illustrated by award- winning author Zak Sabbath and Sarah Horrocks.

Told entirely from a mobile messaging perspective, the story is a sharp, mature and often terrifying submersion into your first nights as unwilling predator and prey. Hunted by unknown enemies and driven by an alien hunger, will you sever your ties with the mortal world or try to cling to your former life? Will you join ancient conspiracies, or turn the tables on forces older than the written word? Terrible power lies within your grasp, but there is always a price to pay.

Don’t forget to check out Mage: Refuge, also by White Wolf and written by critically-acclaimed author Karin Tidbeck.

Story told through text

Just finished it and it was quite engaging. My only gripe is that at certain points in the story it becomes a guessing game as to what options to pick, only one is correct so u have to replay it several times usually to find the right one.

Survive on mean streets

Fun little game only took about three hours thou to get through

VtM is back~

I feel like it could've been a better - but, it is White Wolf's first kind of attempt at this sort of thing. Mostly I had issues with the writing - sometimes it just straight up didn't make sense and was really all over the place, and I'd only get the gist of what was going on. At times it was like coherent sentences were just dropped in a blender and then tossed on the screen. It was also a little annoying how the major choices were VERY linear. Like little choices of you just responding normally in conversation didn't seem to matter, but, the major choices had a very specific path that needed to be followed otherwise you died if you stepped a toe out of line.

Don't get me wrong, though. I'm a HUGE World of Darkness fan, mainly of the Vampire The Masquerade series (Bloodlines was one of my all-time favourite video games!), and to see an interactive messenger-style story like this available? Gets my heart racing. I LOVE the idea. But I feel like a few tweaks could be made. The storyline was kinda iffy simply because there was just... So much vagueness. In my opinion, you'd really need to have prior knowledge of the World of Darkness before playing this game - there's not enough conversations where you get to properly ask about what's going on when you do meet other vampires, and even when things are attempted to be explained, the dialogue is just so broken it's hard to make it out. I'm sorry, but, it was far beyond 'text talk' and just wasn't natural. I get that some characters would, of course, have their own way of texting; it reflects personality. But this... This was just... no. Even worse were the supposedly recorded voice texts - they just didn't sound natural at all. More broken sentences, like someone made a thousand typos in their speech. They're just things that could be tidied up a bit in future releases. Oh, and, uh, a little thing - would somewhat character customisation be available? Just, I dunno. Selecting a gender and picking your own name or something. It's small, but kinda nice.
Again, though. I adore the concept. It can get peculiarly atmospheric, too; I started playing on my way home on the bus, and, of course, the opening sequence involves riding a bus. And, oh, man, at the final mansion in LA, I started getting quite stressed with the sudden flood of messages from people - some from allies, some from foes. It was good! And I really, REALLY encourage the continued creation of these types of games. I've been waiting for a long time for something like this, and I really look forward to more of them. I'm really happy to see VtM returning, and hopefully, other worlds soon, too - I've already purchased the Mage one.
