Save for Michael Jordan, Clyde “The Glide” Drexler was the best shooting guard in the NBA for a stretch of the years, leading the Portland Trailblazers to the NBA Finals twice, and was one of the most consistent players ever, averaging over 15 point per game for 15 straight seasons. In Clyde’s final NBA season, at the age of 35, he was still playing 35 minutes per game and averaging 18 points, 5 rebounds, 5 assists, and 2 steals.

Clyde burst on the scene as a member of the University of Houston’s famed “Phi Salmma Jamma", a group of athletic high flyers that included future Houston Rockets teammate Hakeem Olajuwon, with whom Clyde won an NBA title in 1995. Clyde was also a 10-time All-Star and was a member of the 1992 USA Dream Team for the Barcelona Olympics.

Background on Clyde Drexler

Clyde Drexler was drafted in 1983 by the Portland Trail Blazers. His rookie season did not start off too well, with him only averaging 7.7 points. However Drexler's second season was where he started to shine, managing to more than double the number of points he made, averaging 17.2 points, 6 rebounds, and 5.5 assists per game. He made the All-Star team in his third season. Over the next three years Clyde Drexler would average 18.5 points and 5.6 rebounds per game. In the 1989–1990 season the Portland Trail Blazers made it to the finals, where he averaged 26.4 points and 7.8 rebounds per game, but in the end they lost. He made the All-NBA First Team in the 1991–92 season and came in second place. That season Drexler made it to the finals again only to be beaten by the Chicago Bulls. He averaged 24.8 points and 7.8 rebounds that season. In 1992 he was part of the U.S. Olympic basketball team that won a gold metal. On February 14, 1995 Clyde Drexler was traded to the Houston Rockets mid-season. The team was able to do well in the playoffs, even after Drexler was ejected for a game against the Phoenix Suns by the referee of the game, Jake O'Donnell. The Houston Rockets were able to make it to the finals. Drexler averaged 21.5 points and 9.5 rebounds per game and won the championship against the Orlando Magic. On February 13, 2009, he played in the NBA All-Star Weekend's Celebrity Game with Basketball Hall of Famers and four of the Harlem Globetrotters. Currently, Clyde Drexler is a college basketball coach.

FAQ on the Clyde Drexler Basketball Workout

Who should train like Clyde Drexler?

You're and athletic scoring guard who can get a bucket anytime you feel like it. Athleticism is your calling card, and you can shoot when defenders play off of you. You like driving hard at the rim and are pretty much unstoppable once you're in the paint. Once you get going with scoring, you can score from anywhere.

The Clyde Drexler workout is my first Hoop Handbook, is there anything I should know?

You'll be driving and finishing a lot, and making quick jumpers off of your first step. Get to it!
