Travels in a Sunburned Country
This book can be downloaded and read in iBooks on your Mac or iOS device.
It is the driest, flattest, hottest, most desiccated, infertile and climatically aggressive of all the inhabited continents and still Australia teems with life – a large portion of it quite deadly. In fact, Australia has more things that can kill you in a very nasty way than anywhere else.
Ignoring such dangers – and yet curiously obsessed by them – Bill Bryson journeyed to Australia and promptly fell in love with the country. And who can blame him? The people are cheerful, extrovert, quick-witted and unfailingly obliging: their cities are safe and clean and nearly always built on water; the food is excellent; the beer is cold and the sun nearly always shines. Life doesn’t get much better than this…
The funniest book ever - I had to read it twice,
Down under, down under
Thanks Bill for the best book I've read in years! I'm an Aussie and loved it all, and laughed myself silly at times .. Like a cut snake! Recommend this to all of us who like to take the Micky out of themselves, and to those who need to let go and see Australia and Auatralians as they really are. Thanks a million Bill
Interesting read, however....
Although Bill assures us that, interestingly on countless occasions, he loves Australia and Australians, the book contains a subtle condescending tone and some rather broad generalisations about the Australian character, which detracted from my enjoyment in reading this book.
