Course Description

This course has been written to support students who are studying the Year 11 Biology topic A Local Ecosystem, especially those who are taking part in the fieldwork excursion of the same name run by Field of Mars Environmental Education Centre in Sydney, Australia.

This online course and associated fieldwork program supports learning outcomes from the NSW Board of Studies Stage 6 Biology syllabus.

This online course must be completed before attending the day-long A Local Ecosystem excursion as it covers essential content and skills necessary for fieldwork activities and student assessment tasks.

Students will need to revisit this course after the fieldwork to assist them in completing their assessments.

It is important for students to discuss how to approach this course with their classroom teacher, for while the fieldwork task is central to their study of the A Local Ecosystem unit, there is some content in the topic that is not covered by this course.

Some teachers may set sections of this course as homework tasks in the weeks leading up to the Field of Mars EEC excursion, other teachers may prescribe this course as reading material at the beginning of the unit.

To complete this course students will need around 2 hours for reading, annotating and reviewing the course materials.

A website version of this course can be downloaded by chapter from the resources section of the Field of Mars website.
