Years 5-8: Anzacs 100 years

by Keilor Views Primary School

This course material is only available in the iTunes U app on iPhone or iPad.

Course Description

In commemoration of the 100th anniversary of the Gallipoli campaign, this self-paced course contains activities and materials ready-made for the iPad classroom.  It provides teachers with ideas for exploring the concepts and issues related to this important chapter in our nation's history.

The course is designed as a complete unit plan: a progressive series of learning intentions and tasks accompanied by a range of high quality resources.  It culminates in a higher order rich assessment task composed around the essential question:

"What does the Anzac story mean to me?"

Each post works like the chapter of an information text in that it can be accessed in any order - each post offering a specific theme or inquiry question to ponder.  Each chapter contains a description, some key questions, materials and suggested activities.  Teachers have the flexibility of accessing any part of the course as a whole class (via an IWB or projection), small group or as part of a student-directed inquiry (or combination).

The course construction is ideal for flipped learning

The novel study section - based on two novels: Anthony Hill's Children's Book Council of Australia short-listed book, "Soldier Boy" and Morris Gleitzman's "Loyal Creatures" - contains a link to purchase the eBook version.  While the digital version is worthwhile downloading, it is recommended that you check in your school's library for the soft back version.  Each book - particularly "Soldier Boy" - is an excellent choice as a serial novel.

Students enrolled in the course will be able to access all the materials and activities.  Most materials are free and although a small number of them require payment, they are deemed worthwhile - particularly for students who are interested in exploring the subject in greater depth and at their own pace.
