Course Description

Aim of Literature Circles Unit
The aim of this unit is to introduce you to the concept that, by analysing the important elements in a novel such as character, structure, key events, imagery and symbols, we can examine the author's views and values on the ideas and themes that are explored throughout the novel.

The Literature Circles unit aims to assist students in progressing towards AusVELS levels 10 in the English domain (Reading and Viewing) in the following strands and sub-strands:
Language for Interaction
  • Understand that people's evaluations of texts are influenced by their value systems, the context and the purpose and mode of communication.
Responding to literature
  • Reflect on, extend, endorse or refute others' interpretations of and responses to literature.
Examining Literature
  • Analyse and evaluate text structures and language features of literary texts and make relevant thematic and intertextual connections within texts.
Interpreting, analysing, evaluating
  • Identify and analyse implicit or explicit values, beliefs and assumptions in texts and how these are influenced by purposes and likely audiences.
  • Choose a reading technique and reading path appropriate for the type of text, to retrieve and connect ideas within texts.
Creating texts
  • Create sustained texts, for analytical and expository purposes, that reflect upon challenging and complex issues.
