Harry Caine is a successful writer but a man who writes, lives and loves in darkness. Fourteen years ago Harry was in a brutal car crash on the island of Lanzarote, resulting in not only the loss of his sight, but of something much greater. However, Harry Caine is a pseudonym and only a few people know Harry's real identity and of the life he led before the accident. Now Harry has decided to tell the moving and terrible story of his former self, a story of "amour fou", dominated by love, jealousy, treachery and fatality.
Brilliant and deep
Starting like a movie with a simpler plot this film twists and turns through levels of detail. Professional camera work captures beautifully crafted scenes of drama and emotion. There are a couple of slow moments in this movie and one does feel confused at their stillness. One can only take such moments as a forced pause so that the viewer can recover their breath. The topic is dark yet not dark enough for the viewer to turn away. This movie will draw the viewer closer; making them focus on every detail and when it is over the audience will leave satisfied. The film feels complex and mysterious; however, it knows exactly where it is going. It is a roller coaster and the viewer, a first time rider who has no idea of what will happen, all the consumer is focused on is the excitement of the moment. Penelope Cruz is amazing, she has so much energy which has not been available in her English speaking films. She stars in one of the funniest scenes produced in the last thirty years.
