About the Movie
In early 1997 Anu Singh, a beautiful law student at the Australian National University, confides in friends that she plans to kill herself to put an end to a mysterious illness. With doctors unable or unwilling to help, Anu’s engineer boyfriend, Joe Cinque, attempts to get to the bottom of her condition. But Anu’s mental and emotional state disintegrates, and her plans grow more macabre. Joe Cinque’s Consolation by award winning filmmaker Sotiris Dounoukos, is the adaptation of Helen Garner’s best-selling account of these true-life events: an examination of collective and individual responsibility, and a crime that shocked Australia.
Says it all really
In 1997 Anu was a bright law student at the Australian National University in Canberra. She laced her boyfriend Joe’s coffee with Rohypnol to sedate him and then later injected him with a lethal dose of heroin in their north Canberra flat. It took 36 hours for Joe to die in their bed, while Anu stood by.............. but she's really really sorry now,...that's the main thing , what she has had to go through good god she is just evil
Very poorly written film
The technical direction is adequate but the script is appalling bad. The actors do their best with a truly awful script. It seems like the director's personal relationship to the characters involved coloured the tone of the film, and not in a good way. It's a shame that he turned a fascinating and heartbreaking story into this misogynistic mess. There's no introduction to the characters, none of the necessary exposition required for the audience to invest in anyone, particularly Joe who should be the most sympathetic character but just comes across as a hapless dweeb. I wish Australian film funding bodies would stop giving money to writer/directors who clearly can't write.
My opinion only.
I have yet again been the proud witness of another Australian feature film worthy of commendation. I'm not sure why another reviewer has tried to slaughter the writers script? Being a well known Crime I enjoyed the way this film portrays the events & main characters. I don't need to fall in love with a character to invest in the movies plot or ending. Well done, bravo. Worthy enough to be given a award.
