Plot Summary

Kumare presents himself as an enlightened guru from the East who builds a following of disciples in the West. But Kumaré is not a real guru. He is American filmmaker, Vikram Gandhi, who has transformed himself into guru Kumaré, acting as the centerpiece of a social experiment designed to explore and test one of the world's most sacred taboos. Concealing his true identity from all he meets, Kumaré attracts a colorful cast of followers and forges profound, spiritual connections with real people from all walks of life. At the same time, in the absurdity of living as an entirely different person, Vikram the filmmaker is forced to confront difficult questions about his own identity. At the height of his popularity he reveals his greatest teaching: his true self. A playful yet genuine and insightful look at belief and spirituality, the film crosses a line few have dared to cross, all to discover: from illusion comes truth.

worth the time

This is an interesting documentary definitely. so i give it 4 stars for entertainment value. It definitely made me think alot about subjects that are current and reliant. There was nowhere in the story where i was bored , though slight repetition in the delivery which made me feel as if the director was limited on material and variety, so was stretching it out a little, but not so much as to cause lack of flow. the structure was strong and i had the feeling i truly needed to see the documentary to the end to get closure. which is a good value to have in film making. The camera work and audio was very professional. It views like a reality TV show with no hint of budget limitation.
It clearly fits into the style of Sacha Baron Cohen "Borat" "Dictator" "Ali G". . On one hand it is entertaining on the other none of us would like to be on the receiving end of this type of 'seemingly' deception based roll play docu mockery. So I awarded an extra star for being risky and making me the audience uncomfortable but not disrespected. It also made me then search for interviews like the one on TED.COM for deeper understanding of the directors motivations for creating such a risky documentary.
