About the Movie

In 1997, novelist Arthur Golden offered readers an intoxicating and riveting story of a hidden world in his acclaimed novel, MEMOIRS OF A GEISHA. Now Oscar Registered nominated director Rob Marshall ("Chicago"-2003), along with an acclaimed international cast featuring 2005 Oscar Registered nominated Best Actress Ziyi Zhang , Ken Watanabe ("The Last Samurai"), Michelle Yeoh ("Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon") and Gong Li ("The Emperor and the Assassin"), has brought this mesmerising fable to the screen. Set in a mysterious and exotic world which still casts a potent spell today, the story begins in the years before World War II, when a Japanese child is torn from her penniless family to work as a servant in a geisha house. Despite a treacherous rival who nearly breaks her spirit, the girl blossoms into the legendary geisha Sayuri. Beautiful and accomplished, Sayuri captivated the most powerful men of her day, but is haunted by her secret love for the one man beyond her reach.

read the book first? or other way

Based on a true story, though catalogued as fiction, the story follows women (Geisha more specifically) who are amongst prime ministers, executives, generals and the chairman. In a predominantly Japanese culture, how could it be said that they do not still feature so prominently in today’s society. This film is a historical account, book to film adaptation that cannot be separated. Happenings with-held from print intermingle the production of Columbia Pictures, DreamWorks Pictures and Spyglass Entertainment coming together.

This film is 5 star rubbish and that is being polite. I can acknowledge that as a cosmetic tapestry it has merit, but none the less it is a lead bar coated in a very thin veneer of gold.

Such a fantastic film! I read the book first and thoroughly enjoyed it
