About the Movie
Fitzgerald-like, would-be writer Nick Carraway leaves the Midwest and comes to New York City in the spring of 1922. Chasing his own American Dream, Nick lands next door to a mysterious, party-giving millionaire, Jay Gatsby, and across the bay from his cousin, Daisy, and her philandering, blue-blooded husband, Tom Buchanan. It is thus that Nick is drawn into the captivating world of the super rich, their illusions, loves and deceits. As Nick bears witness, within and without of the world he inhabits, he pens a tale of impossible love, incorruptible dreams and high-octane tragedy, and holds a mirror to our own modern times and struggles.
A lesson in style and well acted 4/5 B-
The Great Gatsby, one of the worlds most famous novels. Directed by style guru Baz Luhrmann and starring acting juggernaught Leonardo Dicaprio and co starring Joel Edgerton, Sila Fisher, Carey Mulligan, Tobey Macguire and Jason Clarke. The films stylish and a at times a little over the top, the emotional story at the films heart is all that was needed for this film but style over powers the strong emotions present in the film, in fact some of the films best scenes were not shot in front of a green screen. The acting is tremendous with no weak link in the cast even Tobey Macguire stands out as he gives his second best performance of his career (first being in brothers). But this film is enjoyable to watch, if not a Baz Lurhmann fan see it for the acting. 4/5 B-
Different but lively interpretation
I had my doubts about this film, having read the book and seen the original film, and Baz Luhrmann's films never impressed me, but his interpretation is just as dramatic and stylish as it should be. It is a well acted and directed film that really does help make it good for a modern audience.
I love this movie. Everything is done exceptionally well, the clothes, the scenery and the acting. When will Leonardo Dicaprio ever get an Oscar? He deserves one.
The movie also had a very good message behind it. If you haven't watched this movie before including the old version or you haven't read the book, then I promise the ending will be something you won't expect.
