Iconic writer, director, actor, comedian, and musician Woody Allen allowed his life and creative process to be documented on-camera for the first time. With this unprecedented access, Emmy (R) - winning, Oscar (R) - nominated filmmaker Robert Weide followed the notoriously private film legend over a year and a half to create the ultimate film biography. Woody Allen: A Documentary chronicles Allen's career - from teen writer to Sid Caeser's TV scribe, from standup comedian to award-winning writer-director averaging one film-per-year for more than 40 years. Exploring Allen's writing habits, casting, directing, and relationship with his actors first-hand, new interviews with A-listers, writing partners, family and friends provide insight and backstory to the usually inscrutable filmmaker.
A must see
Woody Allen is the most amazing guy you will ever see. This doco gives a beautiful insight into his mind. Well done!
Essential watch for all Allen fans!
This doco shows an intimate and affectionate celebratory study of the great comedian, writer, film maker and musician Wood Allen. Great scenes showing Allen directing on location, in the studio, editing and glorious material on Woody's boyhood and early life. It's a pleasure to watch although it does not take us too far beneath the surface.
I am not a fan of Woodys films on the whole (bar a couple) but I appreciate his talent and was interested to gain a little insight into the phenomenon that he is.
Although I agree in that this film doesn't take us too far beneath the surface it does give us a window into a Woody that we may not have known, particularly in the sense of his nonchalant attitude toward his art and ultimately, his success.
I thoroughly enjoyed the authentic humility purveyed throughout, something that is so glaringly absent from contemporary American film generally.
