Heart of darkness

Mavis Gary suffers from high self esteem. Why shouldn't she return to the town she grew up in and claim her high school love for herself? Even if he's now married and just had a baby? She is, after all, Mavis Gary.

Charlize Theron has never been better than in this icy performance; she captures multiple layers of disdain at the town she grew up in and the people who remained there by a simple look down at her nose at them.

Patton Oswald is a revelation as a former high school classmate of Mavis's who tries to make her see her plans are not quite as brilliant as she thinks they are.

This is a dark, somewhat cruel comedy about arrested development and misguided ambitions that is definitely not for lovers of simpler, laugh out loud movies but it is well worth watching for the brilliant performances and the laser sharp screenplay that wastes no time on any digressions from Mavis's task at hand.

It was okay.

I was distracted by thoughts of WHO IS LOOKING AFTER HER DOG.

Not as great as you would think

Too many threads, quirks, and preening of the main character Charlize Theron (alongside too many images of her eating amounts of junk food that would never allow her to look the way she does). It's a bit much - naive characters, unresolved issues, overly romanticizing the small town. It just wasn't real, shocking or funny enough.
