Episode 82 - No Wrong Way to Yoga with Marc Settembrino

Episode 82 - No Wrong Way to Yoga with Marc Settembrino

Glenys and Aaron welcome Dr. Marc Settembrino to the podcast to talk about his experience with becoming a yogi and creating inclusive yoga classes through Fat Kid Yoga Club.
    Marc discussed:
-how yoga helped him feel better in difficult times
-how there is no wrong way to do yoga
-the intersection of LGBTQ+ and fat identities
-letting your body be the guide in how you adapt yoga for you
Marc began practicing yoga in 2015. As a fat, queer, yoga practitioner, they understand that starting a new yoga practice can be intimidating. Therefore, they create inclusive yoga classes that are accessible to every-body, regardless of size, shape, age, strength, or flexibility. Their work has been featured by OM Yoga Magazine and Yoga Journal and they're a SuperFit Hero Body Positive Fitness provider. They earned their Ph.D. in Sociology from the University of Central Florida in 2013.
Bonus: Aaron and Glenys talk about their recent internet obsessions (reaction videos!) and geek out about their favorite music…to get straight to the interview, skip to minute 9!

Episode 81 - The Fear of Weight Gain

Episode 81 - The Fear of Weight Gain

Aaron and Glenys talk about weight. The global pandemic has put many people in a panic about changing weight. For those recovering from EDs and disordered eating, weight gain is often necessary and a part of healing, but hearing weight gain stigmatized constantly can feel like a huge setback. In this episode, our hosts talk about how they support their clients in normalizing weight gain and taking the focus of healing off of weight and put it more on supportive self-care. They also discussed how weight gain IS normal not only in healing but over a life time for most people. How do we help people navigate the mental and physical discomfort they feel in a changing body? Why is going back to “real” clothing such a pain?! Aaron and Glenys also recount (and cringe over) their pasts when they were steeped in diet culture and promoting weight loss, and how we can meet those feelings with compassion and have gratitude for the community they found in HAES® that allowed them to evolve at their own pace.

Episode 80 - Caroline Dooner Said "F*ck It!" to Diets

Episode 80 - Caroline Dooner Said "F*ck It!" to Diets

Aaron and Glenys talk with Caroline Dooner, humorist and author of The F*ck It Diet, a book that helps chronic dieters untangle themselves from a dysfunctional relationship with food. She used to be a chronic dieter, fully convinced she was a food addict, until she realized that dieting and body hatred were actually the roots of the issue. Caroline talked about her journey towards true non-diet eating: how she tried to manage her PCOS with diets, her foray into the Paleo Diet, the time she tried to turn intuitive eating into a diet, and the epiphany that finally led her to say “F*ck It!” to diets for good. She discussed how the science around the failure of intentional weight loss helped her realize why dieting was so frustratingly futile and how it led to her eventual binge episodes. Caroline also revealed a little bit about the next book she’s working on.

-The lack evidence for weight loss improving fertility
-The mixed research on weight-related fertility issues and the development of gestational diabetes in higher weight people
-The weight stigma higher weight people face at the doctor’s office
-What behaviors actually help to support fertility (hint: there’s no special formula)
-The importance of setting boundaries at the doctor’s office to help create a more equal power dynamic
Nicola is a fat-positive fertility coach, feminist and author of “Fat and Fertile”.
She advocates for change in how fat people are treated whilst accessing help with their fertility.

Great info and podcasters

Hi
I listen from Australia.
I think this podcast is informative and interesting and a great range of topics are covered. I like that they are putting a different side to Dieticians and although I dip in and out of HAES and IE, it gives me a space to come when diet culture starts to overtake again. As a white straight women I appreciate the knowledge i am aging around privilege and it makes for some interesting reflection.
Thanks for doing what you do and being a voice of reason in this weight loss heavy world xx

As a mother, chef, lover of food and a Uni student studying nutrition this podcast is sensational.
It is certainly providing me with a lot of thought as to how I would like to practice as a nutritionist or dietician as I progress through my studies.
I also love your focus on psychology. It is something I have seen as a lay person lacking in so many areas of health. But what do I know...
Anyway, love the podcast binging on a stack of them as I take a break from the textbooks!
Thank you!
