Interviews with athletes about performance.

S02 E09 What Lies Beneath The Surface

S02 E09 What Lies Beneath The Surface

How hard can you push yourself in a competitive situation? In this interview with World Championship Silver Medallist, Alex Manly, we talk about how even her introduction to track cycling at 14 years of age involved her pushing herself so hard that she threw up! No wonder the coaches thought she would have a good future in the sport...
What was really interesting in the chat with Alex, was that she came across as very laid back and easy going, but you could tell from a few of her answers that she was a highly motivated and driven competitor. Alex is a great example of how getting your thought processes and goals in line can be a powerful force for achieving your dreams.

    S02 E08 The Hard Road

    S02 E08 The Hard Road

Sometimes, just sometimes, taking the hard road is actually more rewarding. It exposes you to challenges that you wouldn't have faced otherwise, and it therefore makes you a better athlete. In this interview with triathlete Nick Carling, he talks about his unusual entry into the sport, and how a couple of ongoing health issues nearly forced a premature retirement from the sport he loves. It raises the really interesting question of, when is the right time to call it quits? There are some great lessons to be learnt from Nick's colourful journey, which everyone will be able to relate to in some way.

    S02 E07 Sport For Life

    S02 E07 Sport For Life

According to research, more people are getting involved with self organised sport (such as gyms), but as we will find from the interview with David Vallance, perhaps the true value of club sport is the lifelong friendships that are created. As Club President at West End Rowing Club in Auckland, David shares how his friendships in rowing converted across to sailing, and then brought them back to rowing. He also talks about how he missed out on the NZ youth squad because he wasn't sure about how serious they were on selecting him. It is an interesting scenario that has been covered a few times in recent interviews, and one that is discussed in more depth.

    S02 E06 Adversity Is A Great Teacher

I've always admired athletes who succeed after the odds are stacked against them. In this interview we talk to Grace Abbey about how she missed out on two opportunities to train and play with the young Matildas soccer team. In spite of some major health issues, she has developed the strength and maturity to work her way back into contention.
If you have ever had setbacks in your sporting career and wondered if you should bother continuing to chase your goals, then you will definitely want to listen to this interview.

    S02 E05 Love The Sport

    S02 E05 Love The Sport

What is your motivation for doing sport? Do you do it for the thrill of competition, or do you simply love it because it is fun? In this interview with Australian teenage snowboarder, Cora McCloskey, we discuss why it is important to love what you do. Now while that sounds like an obvious statement, too often the love of the sport seems to disappear as you you get to the higher levels. Performance becomes more important than enjoyment, but the two are inter-related. It's no coincidence that athletes who still love what they do, perform better.

Ruck Yeah! ,

I really liked the interview with the cyclist who nearly died. He was certainly an interesting character who had been through a lot in his life. It's good to see that he is still competing, even if he is not entirely sure why!
Keep the interviews coming.
