Not the same talk show
I went into this open minded after the move from the 5by5 network.
John seems more energised than the last couple of 5by5 shows
No eating or drinking in my ear
John not saying 'I don't know' constantly
Topics were nearly all rehashes of previous Talk Show discussions
Poor production values - the guest audio is terrible
Sponsor ad readings are just painful to listen to - jerky and stilted
Show was all over the shop (more so than the old talk show).
Appeared to have little preparation with lots of John searching for what he wanted to talk about next
Sorry but this isn't the Talk Show. The Talk Show was Dan and John. The reason it worked is Dan did all the work and John just showed up and provided commentary. John should have renamed it something else as it has very little of what made the old Talk Show good. My main concern (as listed in the cover art) is 'your host Mr John Gruber'. Sorry, but as good of a technology commenter as John is, I don't think he has hosting in him. He needs someone to keep him on track and his guests shouldn't be expected to do that. I'll check in again in five or so episodes to see if it has gotten any better (and update this review if it has) but for now this podcast isn't worth the time. Just read daringfireball.net to get the succinct version.
Terrible without Dan.
Shame on you John.
A lack of intellectual honesty
John Gruber is delusional if he truly believes The Talk Show is his own creation. Though many, indeed most, listeners are no doubt drawn from readers of his blog, Daring Fireball, and much of the content of the podcast is usually inspired by the same, whether he likes it or not, Dan Benjamin has always been an integral part of TTS.
Because The Talk Show was ever so slightly misnamed, being in fact a conversation between the hosts rather than merely talk, with Benjamin taking the side of the listener, keeping the conversation on a roll, drawing out Gruber as necessary. For Gruber is nothing if not dour, and while this is perfectly acceptable in an interviewee - especially one with the intelligence and insight possessed by Gruber - it requires a foil that is up to the task to make for a compelling programme.
The Talk Show has been the mind of Gruber, made accessible by Benjamin.
Which is certainly not to say that Gruber cannot make a lasting, compelling podcast on his own and on his own terms but, without Benjamin, to call it The Talk Show is misleading the audience he would like to attract and spitting on the memory of what has gone before. Why not call this the Daring Fireball podcast or The Gruber Show and be done with it? A couple of weeks of pointing this out on his website and any audience members who were lost will have found it again, and by showing respect he will surely gain respect in return.
But for now, this would be The Talk Show, without Dan Benjamin to provide its other half, is not so much the sound of one hand clapping as just the sound of one hand flapping rather inconsequentially.
