A Place to Call Home

In the aftermath of George's shooting, Sarah works desperately to keep him alive. Her efforts buy George more time, but reveal that she's still in love with him. Witnessing that, Regina is overtaken by jealousy. René is plunged into a disassociated state, confusing Inverness for wartime France after Sarah chooses to travel to Sydney with George, rather than stay behind with her husband.

It is two weeks since George's shooting, and Sarah, carrying the secret knowledge of her pregnancy, is tormented by terrible dreams. As George returns home from the Sydney hospital, Sarah goes to René, released from gaol, and recuperating at the hospital in Inverness - much to the consternation of the locals, who are wary of this potentially violent foreigner roaming free.

Sarah is in Sydney, on a quest to find a doctor who will terminate her pregnancy. It's emotionally draining, not only trying to differentiate over the phone between 'backyard' operators and medical practitioners, but she's on tenterhooks keeping the truth from Aunt Peg. Peg eventually guesses that Sarah is pregnant, but is not at all prepared for the news that the baby is George's - Sarah has sinned in having sex before marriage. Sarah cannot keep the truth of her quest from Peg, and does her best to explain why she can't keep the baby. Peg desperately offers to bring up the child, but eventually respects her niece's decision, and provides her with the phone number of an abortionist.

Sarah can't go through with the abortion. She is in such a state as she leaves, and takes the wrong door, crossing paths with Nancy, and her terrified young daughter, Linda. Sarah hurries back to a relieved Aunt Peg, who comforts and reassures her.

Two days have passed since Sarah revealed to René she is pregnant with George's child, and he's having trouble accepting the situation. Questioning the wisdom of living in George's shadow, she proposes moving away from Inverness for a fresh start. But René refuses - if he dies, he wants to know Sarah and the baby will be looked after. His reasoning does nothing to allay Sarah's concerns.

As George drives into the city for a meeting about his political future, he discovers Sarah by the side of the road, doubled over by her bike. Though she insists she's fine, George drives her to the hospital. Behind closed doors, Jack examines Sarah, and she faces the reality that she could be losing the baby. Jack admits her to hospital, and Sarah asks to have René brought to her.
