Offspring, Network Ten's exuberant, romantic drama set in Melbourne's Fitzroy, centres on Nina Proudman (Asher Keddie). Season Five follows Nina's journey into motherhood as a single parent and her struggle to deal with her fabulously messy family. Nina rediscovers the joy and romance of life and continues her tendency to over-think and fly off into fantasy. The season begins six months after Patrick's (Matthew Le Nevez) death; Nina and Billie are living together raising Nina and Patrick's daughter. Determined to jump back into life, Nina returns to work at the hospital. But re-entering the world of obstetrics isn't easy when she's confronted by memories of Patrick. Sensitive to her situation the Proudman Family and St Francis staff treat Nina with kid gloves and she's relieved when they return to their usual habit of teasing her. Billie Proudman (Kat Stewart) is Nina's unruly elder sister, bold, brassy and incapable of lying. Once the wild child, Billie is now a dedicated Aunty to Nina's baby. She's also undergoing a self-imposed bout of celibacy as she waits for her estranged husband Mick (Eddie Perfect) to return from the UK. Wanting to make up for the mistakes of her past, Billie stays on the straight and narrow, focusing on her new business venture with Ange, but Billie is soon presented with a surprise temptation. At the start of this season, Jimmy (Richard Davies) and Zara (Jane Harber) are juggling parenthood and an expanding taco empire. Zara is six months pregnant and Jimmy is about to acquire another baby of his own, a third pop-up Taqueria. Shaped by Patrick's death, Jimmy's new attitude to life will see him take on new responsibilities that will surprise everyone in the Proudman family, especially Zara. Following the Proudman family's adventures searching for love, fulfilment and balance in the chaos of modern life, Offspring is about the life forces that drive us all: love, sex, babies, food and music. This life affirming series provides food for the soul as it examines the curses and the blessings that come with intricate family connections. Stylistically fresh and visually exciting, Offspring mixes conventional narrative drama with flashbacks and fantasy sequences, showcasing the vibrant world of Fitzroy, Melbourne, where Nina and the extended Proudman family go about their unpredictable daily lives. Produced by Endemol John Edwards for Network Ten.
