Album Review

George Gruntz is best known as the leader and arranger of his Concert Jazz Band so this trio date is a real rarity. Gruntz's piano playing, although very much in the tradition, features his own individual voice. Joined by bassist Mike Richmond and drummer Adam Nussbaum (flugelhornist Franco Ambrosetti makes the group a quartet on "Autumn Again"), Gruntz is in excellent form throughout this enjoyable live set.

Gruntz first attracted attention at the 1958 Newport Jazz Festival, where he appeared as a pianist with the Marshall Brown International Youth Band (which also included Dusko Goykovich). In the early 60s he worked with several leading American jazzmen, including Dexter Gordon; later in the decade he was with Phil Woods in the latter’s European Rhythm Machine.
