With Brook Benton compilations seemingly breeding like rabbits, it's hard to get excited by the new kid on the block. This one features the classy baritone's recordings prior to "Rainy Night in Georgia" (not included), a turnoff for some. Despite the omissions, these 17 well-delivered gems made many lifelong fans; the legacy includes "It Just a Matter of Time," "Boll Weevil Song," "Shadrack," and "Lover's Question." The writer of many of his hits, Benton's songwriting skills never got its just dues. Magic Collection is the perfect CD for the Benton purist, no duets, just Benton.
