Album Review

One of the many jazz musicians active in the New York area in the 1990s, Robert Silverman had a chance to record as a leader when he provided Drivin' for fellow pianist Mike Longo's small CAP label in 1999. You won't find Silverman inundating listeners with overdone standards on this decent, if conventional, post-bop/hard-bop outing. All of the pieces were written by Silverman himself, and that includes everything from modal, John Coltrane-ish grooves like "The Blues Will Never Leave" to the bop-minded "The Clincher," the charming, somewhat Keith Jarrett-ish "Hymn to Jahan," and the gospel-influenced title song (which wouldn't have been out of place on a David "Fathead" Newman session in the 1960s or 1970s). Joined by tenor saxman James "Doc" Halliday, alto saxman Kyle Whelan, bassist Akira Ando, and drummer Dean Cummins, Silverman demonstrates his proficiency on both the piano and cornet (which he plays as a second instrument). This CD indicated that Silverman was someone to keep an eye on.
