About Lucky Soul

The sugary, retro-minded sounds of Lucky Soul are created by Toby Fogell (bass), Ali Howard (vocals), Andrew Laidlaw (guitar), Ivor Sims (guitar), and Nathaniel L. Perkins (drums). The London-based quintet, which delivers a charming '50s-styled pop sound that's part Sandie Shaw and part Ronettes, formed in early 2005 upon the demise of Perkins and Laidlaw's original group. After adding Howard's candied vocals and the structured musicianship of Sims and Fogell, the Lucky Soul package was complete. A concert alongside the Pipettes marked Lucky Soul's debut performance in June, and the band's debut single, "My Brittle Heart/Give Me Love," became a quick hit with British music critics. Its follow-up, the shimmery "Lips Are Unhappy," arrived in June 2006 on the Ruffa Lane label. More praise followed, particularly with continuous acclaim from BBC Radio 1, and the band put out their first EP, Ain't Never Been Cool, in early 2007. They swiftly followed up with their first full-length effort, The Great Unwanted. The record garnered widespread critical praise and earned the band a burgeoning national fan base. They returned with their sophomore album, A Coming of Age, in April 2010. While the release incorporated sounds stylistically akin to both the Smiths and Motown, it also boasted an altogether darker sound palette, which some fans and critics found hard to digest. Despite this, Lucky Soul were commended for their forward-thinking compositions and unique approach to songwriting. After touring to promote the record, the band went on hiatus to focus on family commitments. They returned in 2017 with Hard Lines, a disco-driven record album that featured more angst-driven lyrical themes about social division and political turmoil in the late 2010s. ~ MacKenzie Wilson
