Iconoclastic Montreal troubadour Robert Charlebois led Quebec’s shift from chanson to rock, and this 1969 album was a crucial part of the process. His sound here blends folk rock with psychedelia-informed sounds, though he’s not afraid to venture further afield, from the otherworldly effects of “Sensation” to the ironic jug-band feel of the title track, complete with Jew’s harp. Charlebois’ off-kilter humour is undeniably endearing, but he also displays a gripping theatricality, gamely throwing himself into every tune with aplomb.
