Album Review

Amsterberg turns in a sterling collection of originals dealing with loneliness, bad relationships and victories both big and small in the grand scheme of things. This is a very understated album, its pain and sorrow ebbing out slowly, in more of a whisper than a shout of defiance. Amsterberg accompanies herself on a variety of stringed instruments and the backing tracks also reflect this sparse but very real, almost living room ambience that they bring to each performance. Highlights include "This Will Never Be My Year," "World Of Our Own Making," and the title track.

Boston singer/songwriter Merrie Amsterburg began her musical career as the singer and guitarist for the late-'80s early-'90s band the Natives, who were nearly signed by KISS' Gene Simmons, and recorded tracks with Blondie producer Richard Gottehrer. Unfortunately, both projects were unsuccessful -- Simmons' label wasn't ready in time to offer the band a good distribution deal, and the Gottehrer sessions were never released; soon after, the band broke up.
