Album Review

The Stereo single is the middle ground of the three released from Brighten the Corners material. Although not as strong as Shady Lane/Wanna Mess You Around, it is clearly better than the Shady Lane/Slowly Typed single. The two bonus tracks on the single are "Westie Can Drum" and "Winner of The"; the "Stereo" included here is the album version. "Winner of The" proves to be the stronger effort of the two, and is a classic Spiral Stairs tune. This song is much in the same vein as "Date With Ikea" from Brighten the Corners in its poppy, melodic structure. In fact "Winner of The" could have fit in quite nicely on Brighten, and at times I wonder why it was not included instead of "Date With Ikea." "Westie Can Drum" is a bare-bones arrangement, but becomes a bit repetitious. If you like the fun, driving-with-the-windows-down-on-a-summer-day Spiral Stairs songs, then this disc is worth buying.
