Rainbow

Rainbow

This collaboration between the experimental Japanese group Boris and Michio Kurihara (from Japan's avant-garde institution Ghost) opens with "Rafflesia", a glistening slab of art metal with a sky-cracking riff; later, "Sweet No. 1" shows they can bring the squall whenever they want. But they generally seek beauty here. The title track is daydreamy folk-pop for mixtape lovers, and the muted drumming and languid crawl of the Nico-like ballad "You Laughed Like a Water Mark" feel both serene and dangerous, sinister and soothing.
