After relocating to Baltimore from North Carolina, Benny Boeldt started hanging out with the Wham City, a loose electronic collective including Dina Kelberman, Whartscape, and Dan Deacon, and made his first, self-titled album in 2008. While his debut was carved primarily out of the 8-bit aesthetic, for his second album he stayed digital and retro but took a slicker approach more akin to the blossoming chillwave trend.
