This version of the Charleston Chasers has no relation to the original group from the 1920's other than the fact that it too plays classic jazz originating during that era. The band was formed in England when cornetist Sean Bolan and guitarist Philip Smith discussed the idea of putting together a rehearsal group that would play hot dance music of the late 1920's. Many of the members were originally in the teens when the band was solidified but they sounded quite professional from the start. Most interesting about the group (which is comprised of six horns and four rhythm) is the writing of pianist Raina Reid which gives the ensemble fresh arrangements based on the 1920's style without just merely being a re-creation of vintage records. Their two Stomp Off CDs, Pleasure Mad and Steaming South (from the mid-'90s), are excellent examples of the orchestra's style and show off its ability at reviving and uplifting very obscure material.
