About Jean Mouton

Positions and services held and performed by Mouton included: singer and teacher for the collegiate church at Notre Dame in Nesle (14??); master of the chapel in Nesle (1477); Maitre des enfans, Amiens Cathedral (1500); director of the music in the college church at St, Andre in Grenoble (1502); and in 1502 Mouton was in service to the court of Louis XII where he remained until his death. In the context of the sixteenth century, Mouton is considered the most important motet composer of his age. Scoring over one hundred motets, fifteen masses and twenty chansons, many of these pieces survive because they were published during his life. Elements of his style included full sounds, clear textures, extensions of vocal ranges in separation (no crossing voices), lucid melodic lines and superiorly crafted counterpoint. Typically the chansons were scored by Mouton in the diverse nature of his motets and the masses explored the dynamics between cantus firmus and parody. ~ Keith Johnson
