José Mauro is a Brazilian composer, guitarist, and singer. In 1970, he recorded 24 songs at Odeon Studos in Rio de Janeiro with lyricist Ana Maria Bahiana, producer/conductor Roberto Quartin, arranger/conductor Lindolfo Gaya, and a host of Brazilian musical luminaries. The sessions resulted in two albums. 1970's Obnoxius earned press acclaim for its dreamy meld of MPB, Afro-Brazilian Candomblé spirituality, jazz, folk, psychedelia, and classical orchestration. The remainder of the tracks were not released until 1976 as A Viagem Das Horas, after which, Mauro (unintentionally) disappeared; he was thought dead for decades. Great Britain's Far Out Recordings released Obnoxius in 2016 believing that to be true. However, after hearing from Bahiana, now a famous author and journalist, that he was still alive, a search ensued. Mauro was located living quietly in a Rio suburb. Far Out restored A Viagem Das Horas' complete session recording material and re-released it in 2021.
