About Sclavis

Rising to prominence with the groups Le Marvelous Band and Workshop De Lyon, Louis Sclavis plays soprano saxophone, clarinet, and bass clarinet with an authority very few modern jazz players can even approximate. In 1976, he co-founded the Association à la Récherce d’un Folklore Imaginaire, which proposed that, rather than being constrained by musical ‘roots’, musicians should be free to dream up their own culture. Sclavis’ solo recordings cover a wide and colourful terrain, and he attracted a wider international audience with his recordings for Label Bleu and ECM Records during the '90s and early-'00s. Of particular note are 1997’s DANSES ET AUTRE SCENES and 2003’s NAPOLI'S WALLS. Sclavis has also played with Anthony Braxton, Peter Brötzmann, Cecil Taylor, Chris McGregor’s Brotherhood Of Breath, and Trilok Gurtu, among many others.
